Jameson Special - 3

Sir

I was interested to read your article on the J L Jameson 2-stroke Special engine. Jameson was a very decent fellow and I knew him well in the Brooklands days. As I recollect, he came to me in about 1936/7 and asked if he could buy a GP Bugatti complete, less engine, in order that he could test his engine. Further, he explained that he wished for an excellent chassis so that he could concentrate on developing his engine, without other anxieties and that Bugatti enjoyed the developed perfection he sought.

My stock enabled me to offer him a racer without an engine which he bought and quite possibly this may have been the reason for his having been reported using a Bugatti.

However, about a couple of years later he telephoned me and asked if I would buy the chassis back, which I did. I expect by that time he was deeply engrossed in engineering and could see no further use for experimental engines?
