Your interesting article on the Freiburg-Schauinsland hillclimb stirred the memory. In 1957 I stayed in Freiburg on a school trip (my mother phoned our hotel to tell me that my hero Archie Scott Brown had won the British Empire Trophy!) and we were taken up the never-ending hill in a coach. The road was covered in snow, and part-way up a Goggomobil had taken a hairpin too enthusiastically and was perched, Italian Job-style, over the edge of a substantial drop with the petrified driver unable to escape. We boys wanted to perform a heroic rescue, but the coach driver refused to stop. I imagine some kinder soul eventually came to his aid…
