Festival of Speed honours 'true grit'

Endurance – that’s the theme at the Goodwood Festival of Speed on July 3-5. Not just long-distance racing but personal ‘grit’, as Lord March explained outside his house on a sunny Press Day, in between Jacky Ickx demonstrating a Gulf Mirage and the shriek of an Auto Union D-type. Highlighting its 100 years, Audi promises a “jaw-dropping” sculpture for the Earl’s front lawn.

Look out for the largest-ever gatherings of Silver Arrows GP cars and Porsche 917s, while Lewis Hamilton drives one of his hero Ayrton Senna’s cars. Expect Jenson Button and his Brawn among current F1 machines, plus Le Mans Audis and Lola-Aston, supercars you’ve never seen before (McLaren SLR Barchetta, electric Fisker), a clutch of Type 57s in the Cartier concours, and celebrations of Daytona, Matra and superbike racing, as well as rally action on all three thrilling days.
