The 2020 season includes a record 22 grands prix, although the sport’s own rules stipulate 21 as a season maximum.

All teams collectively agreed to the increase, which adds to the 2019 list (minus the German GP) the Dutch GP at Zandvoort, after a 35-year absence and a new street circuit in Hanoi, Vietnam. It’s the first new race to be negotiated by Liberty Media since it took over running the sport in 2017. Opening in Australia on March 15, the season runs until the Abu Dhabi round on November 29 and now includes seven of the unpopular ‘double headers’ when teams must race on consecutive weekends. Britain’s Silverstone round takes place on July 19.

While it’s the longest championship season ever, it’s not the largest number of Formula 1 races in a year: for example, in 1963 there were 24: 10 championship races and 14 non-title F1 events, and in 1966 there were 22 non-championship races alone. But 2020’s championship record could yet be broken, as despite worries from team personnel the sport’s leaders have stated their hopes of expanding to 24 title rounds in future.
