Stirling Moss watching the motor racing at Mallory Park and Crystal Palace on his bedside TV in Atkinson Morley hospital, Wimbledon, 1962.

A sport carries on without its talisman: almost 50 days after a serious accident at Goodwood ended his top-line career, a recuperating Stirling Moss followed the action via a TV in his room at Atkinson Morley Hospital, Wimbledon. On June 11, 1962 there were two Formula 1 races in the UK, one at Crystal Palace and the other at Mallory Park – the only time the Leicestershire track ever hosted a race for grand prix racing’s cream. This month we celebrate that event’s 60th anniversary on page 84.
