BRDC Gold Star
Points as of July 20, 2009
1. Jenson Button Formula 1 194pts
2. Adam Carroll A1GP 174pts
3. Rob Huff WTCC 136pts
Huff is one of the big movers this month with a haul of 42 points. After two strong rounds in Portugal and Britain, where he picked up two second places and two sixths, he has moved from fifth to third in the BRDC standings and from seventh to fifth in the WTCC table, 28 points behind leader Yvan Muller. Because the cut-off date for the BRDC standings is October 31, his score at Macau in 2008 (where he won) will count, but not his result at this year’s race.
4. Mark Webber Formula 1 122pts
After taking his first Formula 1 win at the Nürburgring, and now equipped with the fastest car on the grid, it won’t come as a surprise if Webber is victorious again this season. If the Brawn GP car fails to catch up and Webber can keep team-mate Vettel under control, he’s in with a chance of the championship and the Gold Star. But with the lack of team orders at Red Bull thus far, Vettel and Webber will no doubt take points off each other, much to the delight of Button.
5. Dario Franchitti IRL/Grand-Am 119pts
Franchitti has also moved up in the past four weeks, from ninth to fifth place, after taking his third IRL win of the year at Toronto on July 12. Penske’s Ryan Briscoe (below) is also doing well after finishing second in Toronto and second to Justin Wilson at Watkins Glen. If Franchitti can keep the results coming in the IRL – which he was leading as Motor Sport went to press – he may well be in the Gold Star running.
