Pascal Wehrlein wins 2024 Formula E title for Porsche
Wehrlein seizes his chance to claim the Formula E championship after Jaguar mishap at London E-Prix showdown
Jaguar duo Nick Cassidy and Mitch Evans were left heartbroken at London’s ExCel when Porsche’s Pascal Wehrlein beat them to become the latest Formula E world champion.
Teams’ and manufacturers’ titles at least marked Jaguar’s first at global level since the 1991 World Sportscar Championship. But its Kiwi drivers were both angered after team orders on Attack Mode power boost strategy contributed to a double drivers’ title fumble.
Four points separated the trio ahead of the winner-takes-all final round. Cassidy started on pole and led Evans in a Jaguar 1-2, but after taking both doses of Attack Mode early his title bid was scuppered by a puncture caused by rear-end contact from Porsche’s António Félix da Costa. Evans then missed the activation zone to trigger his Attack Mode, which allowed Wehrlein to jump ahead. Nissan’s Oliver Rowland won, with ex-Sauber F1 driver Wehrlein beating Evans to second to claim the title. The German had scored his third win of the season in the first of the London double-header races to set up the three-way climax.
