Located a couple of miles west of Castle Rock, Colorado, Continental Divide Raceways was an ambitious motorsport complex set in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. It featured a challenging road course, half-mile oval and dragstrip when it opened in 1959. The road course is listed as 2.8 miles in some sources although contemporary reports claim it was 2.66 miles. Its greatest days were in the late-1960s when the USAC National Championship (Indycars) and North American Formula 5000 both visited. Mario Andretti won the final Indycar race on 28 June 1970. Motorcycle stuntman extraordinaire Evil Knievel jumped 11 Dodge vehicles on 30 July 1972 by which time Continental Divide’s fortunes were on the wane. It staged a NASCAR Winston West race in 1982 but closed a year later when it was sold to real estate developers.
