But the temporary circuit around Detroit’s Renaissance Center was an unloved and bumpy succession of 90-degree corners. Ayrton Senna was the acknowledged master of the F1 event, winning the final three GPs before spiralling costs forced the organisers to switch to Champ Cars in 1989. The race switched to a new circuit on Belle Isle three years later, with the IndyCar series the highlight from 2001. Now promoted by the Penske Corporation, the event returned to its downtown setting in 2023 on a narrow new layout featuring elements of the original circuit and a split pitlane.
