The Losail (or Lusail) International Circuit was built at great cost in the desert outside the town of the same name in 2004. It held the MotoGP Qatar Grand Prix that year and was primarily a motorcycle circuit during its early years. Floodlighting was added in 2007 with the first nighttime race in MotoGP history held a year later. Nigel Mansell won a round of the short-lived GP Masters Series and GP2 Asia visited in 2009. However, it was not until 2021 when Losail staged its first F1 GP under the lights as a replacement race in the rearranged calendar due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which coincided with a long-term deal for the Qatar GP from 2023. Initial plans for this to take place on a street circuit in the capital city Doha at a future date seem to have been shelved. On a circuit with fast, flowing corners that reward aerodynamic efficiency, Max Verstappen and Red Bull won back-to-back GPs from 2023-25 – clinching his third world title at the start of that run.
