The Singapore Grand Prix was a spectacular and award-winning addition to the Formula 1 calendar in 2008. The championship’s first flood-lit night race was held on the city’s public roads adjacent to its Marina Bay. That historic event was won by Renault’s Fernando Alonso, but it transpired to be the controversial “crashgate” affair. Team-mate Nelson Piquet jr later admitted to having spun into the wall on purpose to hand Alonso a race winning advantage once the inevitable safety car was deployed. Overtaking is difficult on these bumpy streets and each of the first 14 GPs held here included at least one Safety Car intervention.
