Hispano-Suiza 'Tulipwood' Torpedo wins 2025 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance

The world’s most prestigious celebration of automotive history crowned a singular creation on Sunday, as a 1924 Hispano-Suiza H6C Nieuport-Astra “Tulipwood” Torpedo claimed Best of Show at the 2025 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

From a field of 229 entries – 55 of them international, representing 22 countries – the Hispano-Suiza stood out not just for its rarity but for its striking, aircraft-inspired bodywork.

Shown by Penny and Lee Anderson Sr. of Naples, Florida, the car captivated judges with both its construction and its remarkable backstory.

“This Hispano-Suiza ticks every possible box,” said Concours Chairman Sandra Button. “The underpinnings are technically advanced. The body is meticulously hand-crafted, light, and lovely. It was, notably, commissioned by aperitif scion André Dubonnet, and he raced it in both the Targa Florio and the Coppa Florio.

“A later owner added pontoon fenders to the car, but the Andersons sought to return the car to its original form so you can see and truly appreciate its torpedo shape.”

The 2025 winner

Known as the “Tulipwood” Torpedo, the Hispano-Suiza was constructed in 1924 using strips of mahogany affixed to an internal frame by 8,500 rivets. The result was an aerodynamic form weighing just 160 pounds when new – a striking fusion of artistry and performance.

Lee Anderson, an avid collector of antique wooden boats, said his affinity for varnished wood immediately drew him to the car.

“I like wood!” he said. “When I saw this I said, my gosh! This is right in my wheelhouse. This is what I really like.”

The Andersons, who previously won Pebble Beach Best of Show in 2022 with a Figoni-bodied Duesenberg J, admitted this year’s victory came as a surprise.

“We had no idea, but we were dreaming about it!” said Penny. Her husband added, “Winning Pebble Beach is probably the highest award you can get in automobile collecting. We are very fortunate to have done it twice.”

For Hispano-Suiza, the triumph was historic as it marked only the third time one of its creations has taken Pebble Beach’s top honor, and the first since 1989.

The Hispano-Suiza’s path to victory was far from uncontested. Strong rivals included the 1939 Maybach SW38 Spohn Sport Zweisitzer, a 1933 Invicta 4½ Litre S Type Corsica Drophead Coupé from Bahrain’s SBH collection, and a 1956 Maserati 200SI Fantuzzi Open Sports Racer.

The Concours is more than an exhibition of artistry and competition, with this year’s event raising over $4 million for local charities, bringing its lifetime total to more than $45 million.

Through the Pebble Beach Company Foundation, those funds support nearly 100 nonprofits focused on youth education, impacting over 10,000 children annually in Monterey County.

The festivities extended well beyond Sunday’s finale. The 27th Pebble Beach Tour d’Elegance, a 70-mile drive along Monterey County’s coastal roads, once again set the tone for the weekend, with participating cars gaining a tie-breaking edge in Sunday’s judging.

The Concours will celebrate its 75th edition on August 16, 2026, returning to The Lodge at Pebble Beach.

Ferrari will be the featured marque, joined by a showcase of creations from coachbuilder Vignale. Organisers also plan to honour Pebble Beach’s own motoring heritage, with classes devoted to the Pebble Beach Road Races and reunions of cars that first made history on its lawns.
