A pristine 1956 Jaguar D-type was awarded Best of Show at this year’s The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering.

More than 200 entrants assembled at Quail Lodge and Golf Club in California for the annual gathering of gleaming automobilia, from 1920s Rolls-Royces to hypercar debuts.

Jaguar’s Le Mans-winning cars were a focus for 2022, just over 70 years after the marque won its first 24-Hour race victory, and it was a D-Type, owned by property developer and investor Bill Pope, which claimed the highest honour.

The car was praised for “its superb construction, design, attention to detail, workmanship and extensive restoration process”.

Other awards went to a BMW M1 in a one-off feature category marking 50 years of the BMW M division, while a 1965 Mini Cooper S won in All Things Mini.

Among its contemporaries were the T.33 and T.50 supercars from Gordon Murray Automotive, as well as Lamborghini’s tuned SUV, the Urus Performante.

Kai Lermen, General Manager of Quail Lodge & Golf Club, said: “This year’s The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering was our best yet.

“The beautiful atmosphere of Quail Lodge & Golf Club and the most exclusive collector and modern cars worldwide make this one of the world’s most renowned automotive lifestyle events.”
