Dusk runs with legendary flame-spitting rally cars: the new rally stage at Goodwood's SpeedWeek

A new rally stage at the Goodwood circuit will be lit up by flame-spitting exhausts and bobbing light bars in a dusk shootout between legendary cars from five decades of the World Rally Championship this autumn.

Beginning with a blast through the tunnel under the track, the course then moves on to part of the circuit in a series of sprints and tight turns.

The new course is set to see the Lancia Stratos, Ford Escort RS2000, Audi Quattro, and Metro 6R4 among the field as part of this October’s Goodwood Speedweek.

Group A cars, including the Subaru Impreza WRX and Lancia Delta Integrale will be among the contenders too, along with the latest WRC machines,

The competition will begin in the evening on 15 October, with the first drivers running at dusk, and the last in full darkness.

Without spectators at the festival, which will be broadcast and streamed, organisers have had the freedom to use areas of the circuit that would normally be thronging with pedestrians and champagne tents.

In a promotional video with Toyota, showing the layout of the course, former WRC driver Kris Meeke is shown speeding through the tunnel under the circuit, then heading to the track in a cloud of tyre smoke.

“Sad as we are not to be able to welcome spectators to SpeedWeek, we are determined to give our fans at home a motorsport event that is like nothing they have seen from Goodwood before,” said Goodwood’s owner, the Duke of Richmond.

“We’ve been able to be much more creative with the course for our rally Super Special, and viewers have something truly spectacular to look forward to.”

Goodwood Speedweek will run from 16-18 October. The cars so far confirmed as competing in the rally stage are:
