How can you fix beige F1? 2025 Singapore GP – Up/Down

This year's Singapore GP was the 2025 F1 season in a microcosm, writes James Elson

All glitz – but the excitement is somewhat lacking...

Red Bull

Try to look on the bright side. The title fight between Oscar Piastri, Lando Norris and Max Verstappen has closed up after a 200mph Singapore stalemate.

That it happened in the most bland title fight ever, the 2025 Crypto.com Aramco Let’s All Be Beige Professionals World Championship, frames the context.

Norris, baulked by Verstappen at the start, ended up bashing Piastri out of the way.

More of this, please! You never caught Ayrton Senna or Michael Schumacher apologising for winning.

Formula Gone – Going Down

Esteban Ocon Haas 2025 SIngapore GP

Are you not entertained? (No)

Haas

Terrible track design plus cars which can’t run together equals an uneventful race.

Are we even surprised it was a drab spectacle?

F1 seems far more intent on taking the money (from glitzy events and powerful car manufacturers) and fixing its problems second (or never, judging by the 2026 regulations).

There’s some irony in the fact that despite the world championship getting all the attention in recent seasons, other championships like IndyCar, WEC and NASCAR have provided far better racing over the same period.

Mixed messages – Going Up

Going a little way to make up up for a pretty damp squid contest was the team radio, which across the field was the best heard for some time.

In typical El Moanador style though, Alonso was the driver seeing red more than any other.

Cut! – Going Down

Max Verstappen Red Bull 2025 SIngapore GP Marina Bay

No racing action please!

Red Bull

The TV director seemed to be focused on anything but the action at times.

Hamilton driving a 200mph car with no brakes? No thanks, didn’t want to see it anyway! Or any of the other overtakes.

Sore loser – Going Up

Piastri came off worse in the opening exchanges as Norris was bumped off Verstappen’s Red Bull and into the other McLaren.

The Australian spent the rest of his race with a bee in his bonnet about it, as communicated to his team.

Not very Ice Man like, Oscar, but still probably the biggest flashpoint in what’s been an uneventful year (i.e. not much of one).

Shine on you crazy diamond – Going Down

Antonelli managed to put another half decent race together, but that wasn’t his best move this weekend.

What was it then? The re-emergence of his space coat, more eye-catching than any of his 2025 drives.

Braking Point – Going Up

Some real heroics from Hamilton

Hamilton driving round with no brakes, hanging on for dear life, to secure eighth in the last few laps.

Love it. Whatever Alonso says.

Wasted effort

Ollie Bearman Haas 2025 SIngapore GP Marina Bay

More paltry offerings for Bearman

Haas

F1’s mercurial man Ollie Bearman scored points for the fifth time this season in Singapore.

That’s equal to or more than six drivers above him in the championship, and yet he still remains 18th out of 20 entrants.

Must wonder why he bothers sometimes.

Long Ball F1 – Going Up

Carlos Sainz WIlliams Singapore GP

Sainz continues his incredible two-race point-scoring streak

Williams

Sainz managed to salvage a point from a desperate race start after both Williams cars were disqualified for dodgy rear wings on Saturday.

All without a safety car too. Chapeau.
