Mercedes has unveiled a new Formula 1 safety car for 2026. Here's how fast it is - and how it differs from the road car

The Formula 1 safety car is capable of speeds that would place it firmly among the fastest road-derived cars in the world.
That performance is not incidental. It is required to ensure that modern Formula 1 cars can continue operating within their optimal performance window during neutralised periods.
When the safety car is deployed, it must control the pace of the field without allowing tyre temperatures, brake energy or aerodynamic performance to fall away.
As cornering speeds and downforce levels have increased, so too has the minimum speed the safety car must maintain, particularly through medium and high-speed corners.
Mercedes-AMG has now retired the GT Black Series that filled that role since 2022, replacing it with the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 PRO 4MATIC+, which made its debut at the Hungarian Grand Prix.
It is the 14th official FIA F1 safety car to carry the three-pointed star since Mercedes-Benz began supplying the role in 1996, and the first to use all-wheel drive.
The new safety car’s interior
The outgoing Black Series completed 51 deployments across its four seasons of service, most recently leading the field for the opening laps of the 2026 Belgian Grand Prix.
The GT 63 PRO 4MATIC+ meets the safety car’s requirements by combining strong straightline performance with the added traction of a fully variable AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system – a first for an official FIA F1 safety car, and one aimed squarely at cornering and wet-weather stability rather than outright top speed.
Its 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine produces 450kW (612hp) and 850Nm of torque, sent through a nine-speed AMG Speedshift MCT transmission, with a standard AMG High Performance ceramic composite brake system for consistent stopping power under repeated heavy use.
A revised aerodynamic package – a new front splitter, dive planes at the front, and a modified rear wing with an active flap – has been developed specifically for the car’s track role, generating additional front-axle downforce. Mercedes has not published a downforce figure for the new car.
The medical and safety cars for 2026

This matters because modern Formula 1 cars are sensitive to airflow consistency. A safety car that is too slow through corners forces drivers to weave and brake aggressively to retain temperature, increasing the risk of mistakes and reducing the quality of the restart.
In operational terms, the safety car is driven close to its limits.
Bernd Maylander routinely runs laptimes that would be unremarkable for a GT racing car but demanding for a road-derived platform carrying FIA lighting, communications and monitoring systems.
The GT 63 PRO 4MATIC+’s cooling capacity, braking hardware and tyre specification – ultra-high-performance Pirelli P Zero R tyres with a dedicated dual-tread compound – are all chosen to support that repeated high-load use.
Mercedes remains Formula 1’s sole safety car supplier, with Aston Martin no longer providing safety and medical cars as of 2026.
How different is the safety car from the road car – and why not use a GT racer?
Although it is based on a production model, the Formula 1 safety car does not run in standard showroom specification. The Mercedes-AMG GT 63 PRO 4MATIC+ used by the FIA receives a number of targeted modifications to support sustained circuit use and operational requirements.
These include the uprated aerodynamic package described above, FIA-mandated lighting integrated into the front section and rear wing – with green and orange signal modules to indicate when overtaking is and isn’t permitted – plus FIA-specific radio, GPS and camera systems built around a central control panel and enlarged tablet interface.
Safety equipment includes a roll cage, six-point harnesses and Recaro racing bucket seats, alongside an inboard fuel tank and Makrolon glazing. The car runs on a fuel blend Mercedes describes as 40% sustainable components.

Despite these changes, the car remains mechanically close to its road-going base. That is a deliberate choice, and it explains why Formula 1 does not simply use a GT3 or GT4 racing car in the safety car role.
A GT racing car may be faster in some conditions, but it is optimised for competition rather than control. Such cars typically operate within a narrow performance window, require specialist set-up changes and aggressive tyre warm-up, and are not designed to deliver consistent behaviour across every circuit, weather condition and race scenario.
The safety car, by contrast, must be predictable, repeatable and universally deployable. It needs to be fast enough to maintain tyre and brake temperatures for the field, but not so fast or sensitive that it introduces variability of its own. A production-based platform provides the FIA with a stable and reliable reference that a pure racing car cannot.
