Singer is embarking on what could be its greatest project yet, with the help of Williams

Singer Vehicle Design is taking its restoration and modification of Porsche 911s to another level. The highest level, in fact: Formula 1.

The LA-based restorer has joined forces with none other than Williams Advanced Engineering to develop an air-cooled, naturally aspirated 4-litre, flat-six, in keeping with the tradition of the 911.

Porsche’s own Hans Mezger – the man behind Porsche’s 911 and F1 engine and a major player in developing the 917 – is also on board with the project as technical consultant.

The three-pronged partnership comes as a direct result of a current restoration, that of long-term Singer client Scott Blattner’s 1990 911. The resulting car will nestle beside his two coupes and his Targa 911, all past projects of Singer.

The full details are still under wraps, with more news expected in September, but Singer and Williams have confirmed its output will tip 500hp and the powerplant will be lighter than ever.

“The Porsche 911 has long been a standard bearer in the worlds of racing and advanced engineering,” said Williams Heritage director, Jonathan Williams. “They’re two things that we care deeply about at Williams. As an admirer of the 911, I’m thrilled that we’re working with Singer and its clients on these restorations.”

Williams jumped at the chance to work with such an important figure in automotive history, according to Paul McNamara, Williams Advanced Engineering’s technical director. “This has been a fantastic opportunity to showcase the core capabilities of Williams Advanced Engineering. Having had the opportunity to consult with Hans Mezger – the ‘father’ of the iconic air-cooled flat-six – about the development of the engine, our team was pleased to be able to provide a solution to Singer’s clients’ requirements and of course, to be a part of this iconic vehicle’s continued evolution.”

Singer Vehicle Design founder Rob Dickinson admitted Singer was equally eager to combine its technology with that of the multiple F1 champions. “Helping our clients realize their unique vision for a reimagined Porsche 911 with the help of automotive royalty is very much a privilege.
