The fifth season of the all-electric Formula E single-seater series opened on the streets of Ad Diriyah in December 2018. It marked the debut for Formula E’s Gen2 cars which featured improved batteries to increase speeds and range, negating the need for a mid-race car swap. Antonio Felix da Costa won that inaugural race for Andretti BMW and the team dominated in 2019 as well – Alexander Sims qualifying on pole for both races and scoring his breakthrough victory. A UNESCO World Heritage site, Ad Diriyah is a northwestern suburb of the capital Riyadh and used to be home to the Saudi royal family.
