NASCAR visited Augusta International Raceway and Speedway from 1962 to 1969 before the ambitious eight-track venue closed at the start of the new decade. A half-mile dirt oval was opened in 1960 which was paved during 1964. The quarter-mile dragstrip was added in 1962 with a 3-mile road course, situated one mile south of the oval, ready a year later. A planned 2-mile tri-oval and lake for hydroplane racing were not completed. The ovals hosted NASCAR’s top division on 12 occasions, while Fireball Roberts scored his final victory on NASCAR’s only visit to the road course on 17 November 1963. The trace of the road course is still visible, but the oval and dragstrip were redeveloped as housing from 2008.
