The city of Avignon held the Circuit du Vaucluse in 1930 and 1931 on a temporary road course in Réalpanier to the east. The first edition was for motorcycles but a car races were added in 1931. The event drew a slim all-Bugatti entry as it clashed with the Spa 24 hours and Grand Prix de la Marne at Reims, and was marred by the death of 25-year-old André Schlumberger in practice. The town’s most famous motor racing son, Jean Alesi campaigned for a round of the DTM touring car series on a street circuit in 2005 without success.
