Racing returned to downtown Miami in 2002 for the inaugural Grand Prix Americas – a weekend that combined both the CART World Series and American Le Mans Series. The circuit was layed out in the Port of Miami’s Bayfront Park, just south of the original Bicentennial Park street circuit. In keeping with other new temporary venues introduced at the time, it was short, overly tight and slippery. 85,000 enthusiastic spectators saw Cristiano da Matta clinch the CART title and Emanuele Pirro and Frank Biela score another emphatic ALMS win for Audi.
