Set in parkland in the middle of the Detroit River, Belle Isle hosted the city’s Grand Prix since it moved from the downtown street circuit in 1992. The original layout was a 14-turn temporary road course that featured a bumpy combination of tarmac and concrete surfaces. The extension opened in 1998 improved overtaking opportunities but passing remained difficult before the event was abandoned after 2001. The race was restored to the IndyCar calendar in 2007, on the original layout at first before the extended version was used from 2013.
