The Basque city of Bilbao was included on the 2005 World Series by Renault calendar on a street race that traversed the River and included an overpass. Overtaking proved difficult with the bumpy, concrete-lined barriers and one competitor – Giorgio Mondini – withdrew from the race on safety grounds. Robert Kubica and Will Power won the Formula Renault 3.5 races which were both started behind the safety car. A crowd of 90,000 was claimed but locals questioned the cost and criticised the disruption so the event was not repeated.
