With mountains on either side, Bristol is nicknamed “Thunder Valley” although one peak was flattened as new owner Bruton Smith brought the circuit up to date. A temporary dirt surface was introduced for the 2020 NASCAR race, with banking eased, although that event was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
