Capitol Speedway in West Sacramento, California was one of three American short tracks by that name, with others in Alaska and Wisconsin. It opened as a quarter-mile dirt oval on 25 May 1947 and was extended to 0.5-miles in 1954. The only occasion that the NASCAR Grand National series (now Cup) visited was 22 June 1957 when Bill Amick scored his only such victory. That race had been scheduled for 200 laps, but it was called a lap early due to a scoring error with Amick’s Ford Fairline a lap clear of the field. There were accidents aplenty that day and three drivers rolled their cars in separate incidents without lasting injury. The half-mile oval held its last race in 1972 and is now a trucking depot.
