An international sports car race had been held at Caracas for two years before the event was elevated to World Championship status in 1957. The course was described as “very tricky” by understated contemporary reports, and the drivers’ association protested to the FIA that it was too dangerous to hold such an event. It did proceed as planned, with one serious accident, but was not repeated.
