Carrell Speedway was another short-lived half-mile dirt oval that held NASCAR races during the early years of the stock car series. Opened in 1948, it hosted three 100-mile championship races during 1951, and John Soares won the 1954 Gardena 500 on the same as the Indianapolis 500. The “Poor Man’s 500” as it was dubbed at the time was stopped four laps early due to scoring confusion. That was the last race at the “Gardena Bowl” for it was due for demolition two days later to make way for the construction of Artesia Boulevard.
