Chengdu was among the new Chinese circuits to open in a proliferation triggered by the country’s inaugural Formula 1 race in 2004. It was sometimes referred to as Chengdu Goldenport Circuit but should not to be confused with the Goldenport Motor Park. It was partially built on reclaimed swampland and was in earthquake zone, both of which were given as reasons for the bumpy track surface when the A1GP World Cup of Motorsport visited in 2008. The pits and other facilities were limited despite being just two years old. Proceeds from the event went to the Sichuan earthquake relief fund. That was the only international meeting to be held at Chengdu and national events proved less and less frequent. Chengdu International Circuit suddenly closed in 2018 and was demolished at the start of the next decade.
