Tim Flock avoided the 96th lap pile-up that eliminated his brother and race promoter Fonty to win the only NASCAR Grand national race to be held at the high-banked half-mile Columbus Speedway on 10 June 1951. The track was marred by tragedy a month after it opened in June 1948. Red Byron crashed into the crowd on 25 July when his front tyre punctured, injuring 17 spectators and claiming the life of seven-year-old James Brannon. Columbus Speedway closed in 1952.
