The Flemish military airfield at Coxyde (Koksijde) held the North Sea Trophy on 3 August 1969, the first European Formula 5000 race to be held outside Britain or Ireland. Trevor Taylor’s Surtees TS5-Chevrolet dominated proceedings with the former Formula 1 driver winning both heats. The circuit was fast, if flat and featureless, with rudimentary facilities. Straw bales and cones lined the course and defined the pit area. The race moved to Zolder for the next two years.
