John Gerber took over as promoter in the late-1940s and secured a NASCAR Grand National race on 2 August 1953. Davenport’s The Daily Times reported that “6,486 dust-soaked fans” saw Herb Thomas beat pole winner Buck Baker to score his ninth victory of the season.
