NASCAR’s top division visited 0.625-mile Eureka Speedway on Memorial Day in 1956 and 1957 although both races had to be called early. Reduced to 0.375 miles in the mid-1960s and renamed Redwood Acres Speedway, it was paved in 1988 and remains active today. The 1956 100-lap event had four cautions and was eventually red-flagged due to dust and the poor condition of the potholed surface. 160 laps were scheduled for the following year’s event only for officials to stop the race with seven laps to go when second-placed George Seeger crashed through the fence. Herb Thomas and Lloyd Dane were declared the winner in 1956 and 1957 respectively.
