The southern coastal resort of Florianópolis held an annual Formula Ford race on a bumpy and unforgiving street circuit from 1989 to 1986. Sud-Am Formula 3 was the headline category in 1997 when Bruno Junqueira clinched that title with victory. Marcelo Ventre had won on the road but was disqualified for overtaking Junqueira during an early safety car period. Only six cars finished a race of attrition and the series did not return.
