Genoa Street Circuit

The city of Genoa celebrated the 500th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’s birth in the city with a Formula 2 race in 1951. A bumpy new track using either side of the seafront dual carriageway was chosen for the occasion. A strong field was assembled although that only included Scuderia Ferrari because they were not offered enough start money to race in the conflicting Grand Prix de Paris. Stirling Moss led an HWM 1-2 from the start only for his differential to fail when 15 seconds in the lead. Alberto Ascari was pulled clear of his burning car when fuel leaked onto his hot exhaust, so Ferrari team-mate Luigi Villoresi inherited victory.
