Green Valley

Dairy farmers Bill and Dorothy McClure designed and built a quarter-mile dragstrip on their farm to the north of Smithfield, Texas in 1960. A 1.6-mile road course was added by using the dragstrip and its return leg with a sharp hairpin bend at its southern-most extreme. The SCCA Trans-Am Championship visited in 1966 and 1967 with Dan Gurney the victor that latter year. Evil Knievel performed his stunt show here in 1974 but Green Valley was under threat due to noise complaints by the time the road course held a Can-Am/Trans-Am double-header on 28 October 1984. Green Valley Raceway closed down on 15 June 1986 with a final, loud, drag meeting entitled “The Last Race” after which it was demolished to make way for a housing development and school.
