Guadarrama

The inaugural Spanish Grand Prix was a curious affair on 15 June 1913 on a 64-mile mountainous road circuit in the Sierra de Guadarrama to the northwest of Madrid. The Real Automovil Club de España decided on a handicap event for fully equipped four-seater touring cars, completed with hood and two spare tyres. The competitors left the start in Segovia at five minute intervals and covered three laps. New Madrid Rolls-Royce importer Carlo de Salamanca led a 1-3 finish for the marque in a 70hp Silver Ghost after works driver Eric Platford, who had established a 20-minute lead, pulled over to let the local nobleman win on adjusted times.
