At just one-fifth of a mile, Islip Speedway is the shortest track to host a topflight NASCAR race. Six such events were held between 1964 and 1971, with Richard Petty and Bobby Allison both two-time winners. It is also credited with being venue for the first-ever organised demolition derby in 1958 after owner Larry Mendelsohn decided that fans preferred to see crashes than racing. A figure of eight track was added in 1962. Islip closed on 8 September 1984 and was demolished.
