The original Grand Prix was held on the undulating open roads from Le Mans to St Calais and then La Ferte Bernard. The startline was at Gennes, 12 miles east of the centre of Le Mans. A wooden road was built to bypass the narrow streets at St Calais and Vibraye. The two-day event that changed motor racing was won by Ferenc Szisz's Renault – the Hungarian ensuring his place in the sport’s history books forever.
