Littorio airport was opened in 1928 adjacent to the River Tiber in the northern suburbs of Rome. It served as Italy’s main civilian airport before World War II. The 2.4-mile Autodromo del Littorio was opened within its confines in 1931 featuring two banked turns and a sharp hairpin. Littorio held the Premio Reale di Roma that year and the next but was soon dismantled. The renamed Aeroporto di Roma-Urbe remains today as a private airfield.
