There had been a dirt track called Marlborough Stadium in the 1950s and a paved road course in the city operated in the early-1960s. Peter de Klerk's Alfa Special won three minor Formula 1 races here in 1963-64 but little else is recorded of those events. The back stretch was undulating with competitors leaving the ground over Duiker’s Leap.
