As soon as Liberty Media acquired Formula 1 in 2017, it planned to add a second race in the United States. Negotiations with the owners of the Hard Rock Stadium soon began and a new race around the home of the Miami Dolphins was announced for 2021. Originally delayed by a year due to the pandemic, the inaugural F1 Miami Grand Prix was held amid much hype and excitement on 8 May 2022. The venue featured two long straights and the very technical section between Turns 13 and 16, plus mermaids and a fake marina. Drivers criticised the exposed concrete walls, overly tight Turn 14/15 chicane and loose surface off-line which was likened to driving in the wet.
