Tim Flock won the opening two races held at Montgomery Speedway in 1955 – inheriting victory in the spring event when Herb Thomas’s engine failed with ten laps to go. Marvin Panch scored his breakthrough victory on the recently paved track in 1956, but only 14 cars started, and Montgomery was omitted from the 1957 calendar. The championship returned in 1967 when Jim Paschal passed Richard Petty to score his 25th NASCAR victory. The NASCAR season began before the end of the previous year in those days, and Montgomery held the second round of the 1968 and 1969 seasons. Petty came from a lap down to prevail on 26 November 1967. Bobby Allison was the co-promoter at that time, and he took advantage of a late caution during the following year’s race to snatch victory from Petty on the last lap. Only 2,800 spectators attended on a bitterly cold day, and NASCAR’s top division did not return. The track was renovated in 1999 with lights added and still operates today.
