The Montréal authorities agreed a three-year deal to stage a round of the Formula E Championship from 2017. A fast downtown layout was chosen to host a double-header weekend that concluded the 2016-17 season. Jean-Eric Vergne scored his first Formula E victory and Lucas di Grassi snatched the title from erstwhile points leader Sébastien Buemi. The new champion called the circuit “the best racetrack Formula E has ever seen” although that proved a one-off. A change of city mayor, loss of title sponsor and poor attendance contributed to the contract being cancelled and the race did not return.
