Nashville Fairgrounds

Racing at Nashville Fairgrounds dates back to September 1904 when the likes of Barney Oldfield graced the 1-mile dirt track originally intended for harness horse racing. Paved half- and quarter-mile ovals were built in 1958 and NASCAR visited every year until 1984. It lost its place on the NASCAR calendar following a dispute between track management and the city government. Floodlighting was added in 1965 before the facility was renovated for the 1970 season. The banking was initially increased to 35 degrees although that was too fast, so it was reduced to its current 18 degrees.
