The success of the race in neighbouring Monaco prompted maire Jean Médecin and the Automobile Club de Nice-Côte d’Azur to follow suit. “Palm trees and profuse flower beds impart a pleasing elegance to the Nice circuit,” enthused the Autosport Directory in 1955. Tazio Nuvolari won twice in the 1930s and Luigi Villoresi was successful in both 1946 and 1947. That was the last full length grand prix for sports car races were held on an abridged layout from 1949-51.
