The original intention for the quarter-mile Norwood Arena when it opened in June 1948 was to host dog racing. However, when gambling was not allowed in the county, its purpose was changed to car racing. Emanuel Zervakis survived a protest to win the 1961 Yankee 500 on the only occasion that the NASCAR Grand National series visited. Midgets and lesser stock car events were held thereafter until its closure in 1972. Five-time NASCAR race winner Ralph Moody began his racing career at Norwood.
