Slovenia’s first purpose-built racing circuit is the slow Mobikrog Cerklje that opened on a military airfield in 2000. It held the final round of that year’s European Super Touring Car Cup when Fabrizio Giovanardi clinched the title for Nordauto and Alfa Romeo. However, the circuit soon fell into financial difficulties and it all-but closed after just seven years. It was relaunched as Poligon Gaj in 2017 after the national sporting authority gained a five-year lease from the military. Those plans met with local environmental opposition so the circuit’s future remains uncertain.
