The opening AAA-sanctioned races of 1911 were held on a temporary 11-mile road course outside Oakland, California. What is now known as Indycars briefly returned to the area on the 1-mile dirt Oakland Speedway that had opened in 1931. The grandstands burnt to the ground in 1942 and the facility did not reopen. The shorter, high-banked Oakland Stadium was built on the same site but it too closed in 1955 and the land was redeveloped as a shopping centre.
