Originally a horse track built by landowner Julian S.

Originally a horse track built by landowner Julian S. Carr, the name refers to the local Indian tribe. Bill France noticed the venue when he was flying his private aircraft, and he built a 0.9-mile dirt track that opened in September 1947. It held 32 NASCAR Cup races before it closed in 1968 due to local opposition.
