Built as a half-mile dirt track at South Florida Fairgrounds in 1949, Palm Beach Speedway held seven NASCAR races between 1952 and 1956 during which time Herb Thomas was a four-time winner. It held the first and last rounds of the 1952 season with Tim Flock declared champion at that finale despite rolling his car. “I bet I’m the only driver who has won the championship on his head” was his immediate response. The track was paved during 1955 and held its last NASCAR Cup race a year later. The speedway was demolished in 1984.
